Staff Training
Friends of Nixon has continued to provide support with staff training and educational activities at the hospital.
The two nurses, sponsored by Friends of Nixon have completed their two years of midwifery training in Makeni. They have now graduated and are now working at the hospital.
A third nurse is now in the final year of his Community Health Officer training. He too will take up a full time post at the hospital upon successful completion of his training.
Infection, Prevention and Control Workshop
In 2015, Friends of Nixon funded a post Ebola Infection Prevention and Control workshop at Nixon for ward staff and student nurses in preparation for the reopening of the nursing school that was closed for during the Ebola crisis.
This was delivered by staff from the Lassa Fever Team at Kenema Hospital, a WHO representative and community health care workers. It included sessions on viral haemorrhagic fevers, (the group of disease that Ebola belongs to) as well as practical approaches to infection control including use of chlorine, hand washing and disinfection and waste disposal.
